Rather than Linux on mobile phone and I am starting think it would make more sense to rethink laptops as smaller foldable devices.

Maybe foldable screens can cause a renewal of the laptop. A device that is more prone to actual creation than the phone.

My problem with having a laptop with me is the general bulk of the object with 10-11” being the minimal reasonable size to use an actual computer.

A 10” 4:3 screen folded in half would be like a very wide iPhone. Not the kind of thing you’d put in your pocket but maybe it should be integrated with the bag itself. Not computer in the bag but a bag that you open to unfold both keyboard and screen.

@santi I've spent my teenage years doing a surprising amount of things on this setup here. The foldable keyboard was particularly nice.

I currently have one of the Samsung foldable boys as my phone, and I keep thinking all it would need is some kind of small keyboard affair to really be a usable terminal when unfolded. I mean the shape of the screen is already very usable for Terminal Business, absolutely.

@mr_daemon I have this Chinese N100 8” laptop here . It was cheaper (320$) in 2023 when I bought it back in Switzerland.

I have a love/hate (mostly hate) relationship with it. Notably because screen / GPU works properly only  on Windows and I have to use framebuffer on Linux. Worse is keyboard layout is very irritating.

And it is actually quite bulky / heavy. Right now it has found a role as a dedicated Picotron machine (but coding on this keyboard is still unbearable, I literally prefer using my iPhone with Shellfish!).

I can imagine a recent iPad Mini so light and fast with an *attached* solid keyboard that unfolds could be so great. Something you could your on your lap, not requiring a table.

@mr_daemon Actually I a pre-M1 iPad Pro 11” with the Magic Keyboard which is pretty good in terms of performance / size . Weren’t it limited by iPadOS it’d be very close to my dream machine, lacking only a an appropriate bag that doesn’t require sliding out.
@mr_daemon I suppose Apple would ban #picotron on iPad ? Otherwise it would be such a great platform for it.

@santi @zep I had a series of UltraMobiles, before the Netbook era, and I hated most of them because the keyboard was always JUST too tiny to be nice.

Also I am myself obsessing over the idea of a small machine with a keyboard that has pico8 or picotron on it, because that is absolutely a vibe <3

I think ultimately what I want is for the weird folding phone-also-tablet-also-laptop devices from Westworld to be real.
