Another popular #DayTrip close to a major city is Grouse Mountain. Located in the District Municipality of North Vancouver, just minutes from downtown, Grouse Mountain has an elevation of over 1,200 m and first attracted crowds with an alpine ski area (4 chairlifts servicing 33 runs). Today it's a year round recreational playground with multiple activities for all ages.

One of the most locally famous and popular activities is the Grouse Grind. It's a 2.9 km hike that rises 853 m, and the site of regular races and competitions.

My wife and I visited Grouse Mountain at the beginning of October 2017. On a guided tour at the top we came across several deer and a movie production spreading fake snow for a Hallmark Christmas movie. But we also saw several of these guys behind a huge fence that protected their section of the mountain from dumb humans with an urge for selfies. The picture is zoomed in and doesn't do justice to the massive size of this Grizzly.

If you're going to #TravelCanada then stopping at unique out of way places needs to be an objective. Visiting the Highlands Cinema Museum in Kinmount Ontario is a great example. It's a multiplex theater (5 screens, 550 seats), a museum of movie memorabilia from across North America and a cat rescue caring for 50+ abandoned and feral kitties. It's also the subject of a documentary called "The Movie Man".

Today we return to the province with a large number of #BigStuffInSmallTowns attractions. Peace River Alberta is home to 12-Foot Davis, who made his mark in Canada before we adopted the metric system. Henry Fuller Davis, who inspired the 12-Foot Davis statue, was a legendary figure who was born in 1820 in Vermont. His nickname comes from his success in mining a gold claim that was 12 feet wide.

One of the smallest municipalities in Canada, with a population of 241 living in just 6 hectares, is also one of the oldest. Notre-Dame-des-Anges, established in 1620, is a parish municipality enclaved within Quebec City and home of the General Hospital of Quebec. It has no mayor but has been governed for decades by an administration of Nuns.

If you're going to #TravelCanada then PEI is a great destination because it has the world famous Canadian Potato Museum. Located in O'Leary PEI, it showcases the history of the potato as a crop and has a large collection of antique farming equipment. Check off another #BigStuffInSmallTowns when you take a selfie with the Big Potato out front and hit the restaurant to sample some potato fudge. Mmmmm.... potato fudge.

If you're in The Peg and looking for an awesome #RoadTrip then the Pinawa Dam should be on your list. Just a 30 minute drive from Winnipeg is the Pinawa Dam Provincial Park which contains some of the most impressive ruins in Canada. The dam began operating in 1906 but was closed in 1951, and parts of the dam were later used for demolition practice by the Canadian Armed Forces, and were thereby destroyed.

I'm feeling lazy this morning so I'm stealing this post from Daily Hive to continue the #TravelCanada series. Located roughly midway between Calgary and Edmonton, just north of Hanna, lies Antelope Hill Provincial Park. The 380 hectares was previously in private hands and was donated to Alberta, officially designated as a park in 2014. It is an important bird sanctuary and limited to low impact activity.

Halifax is an awesome #TravelCanada destination, especially if you're a fan of military history. The British Royal Navy used Halifax as a base starting in 1749 and Canada's Navy continues to use the dockyards as their Atlantic base. The Citadel in downtown Halifax is the big draw but numerous fortifications along the harbour channel also give you a sense of how heavily defended this area was throughout its history.

Selkirk Manitoba is the Catfish Capital of the World. The interwebs don't lie. It is also home to a #BigStuffInSmallTowns legend, Chuck the Channel Cat, a 7.6 metre long fiberglass catfish. In 2025, Chuck was named one of Canada’s best roadside attractions by The Globe and Mail, and he turned 40 this past May. The statue was named after local sport fisherman Chuck Norquay, who drowned while fishing in the Red River.
