Breaking: UK plans to ban social media for under-16s

Sir Keir Starmer says he will ban social media sites for under-16s and impose restrictions on gaming and live streaming platforms in some of the most far-reaching online restrictions globally.

@avoca This is retarded. Not only does this rob children of valuable social interactions, it can only be implemented by using nasty age verification technologies.

If you want to limit the actual harm, then ban Facebook and X and any other platform that pulls eyeballs to right wing propaganda using ad money and algorithmic garbage.

@elricofmelnibone

Yup, totally agree.

FYI - to subscribe to Substack in Australia you have to age verify. This is done, for Australian subscribers, by a subsidiary of Palantir.

So, the US intelligence services have a KYC record of EVERY Substack subscriber in Australia.

And there is no way to verify the validity of this statement, so AFAIC its true, its much safer that way.

@avoca Damn, that's insane. What is it about the Brits and their former colonies that makes them so ridiculously repressive?

@elricofmelnibone

Haha... ummm.

Not sure its an exclusively 'anglo' problem is it.

@avoca Im not from the UK but is he serious? How should this protect children online anyway? They always find a way to bypass this age verification shit

@juno0

It really is a matter of appearing to do the right thing, a purely political stunt.

The biggest problem, to my mind, is the minions who make these decisions are so tech-illiterate and gullible to 'big tech' spin, they are creating a more dangerous situation for young people than was originally the case.

For starters, the kids, and lots of sensible parents, are now criminals.

Not to mention the new, massive database of underage kids and their personal details being collected by third-party private companies, for, if you believe that, once collected, this huge revenue earning resource is deleted, you are totally out-of-touch with current marketing practices.

Palantir DOES NOT play by the rules.

Well done leaders.

Also, for context...

Why young people say the social media ban is not working six months on

Research suggests many under-16s are still active on social media platforms. BTN High explores why and tests the accuracy of popular technology used to estimate age.

@avoca well lets not talk about discord getting hacked months ago and they stole alot of ID and most of the IDs are from the UK, age verification is not the right answer when its about child safety
