What do you think we should bring back from the 90s IT departments? 🤔
@nixCraft Servers under the desk, that is the real cloud.
@tubsta @nixCraft with a piece of paper on it that says “do not turn off” and when Sbd ask what is running on it you say “this is bobs he retired 4 years ago nobody knows”
@codingWombat @nixCraft If only hardware was that reliable these days.
@tubsta @nixCraft i would be more afraid of uptime because of power outages with under the desk hardware
@codingWombat @nixCraft You’d be surprised on how reliable CBD power actually is. I’ve seen uptimes of 3000 days back in the good ol days
@tubsta melbourne cbd? so missing living in melbourne :D
@codingWombat This was Sydney back in the day before I moved to Melbourne. But I did see some extremely big uptimes on machines in Melbourne back in the 2000s, probably would have been longer if not for that pesky Y2K issue that needed patching out.
@tubsta @codingWombat as a former big PABX toucher I can confirm insane uptimes on CBD power grids. Yes we had UPS, no we barely ever needed them.
@tubsta @codingWombat in fact it was only ever in outer suburban industrial areas I've seen problems. Big machines feeding back EMF into the grid and making all your electronic equipment sad. Add to that the hotter temps in western sydney and substations would occasionally melt down
@codingWombat @tubsta @nixCraft “…but remember the big outage last quarter? the cleaning staff knocked the power cable out. we still haven’t figured out what the box does, but it seems to be important.”
