June 23 is the 10 year anniversary of Britain voting itself out of the EU.

I hope the British people celebrate by rejoining and strengthening this important alliance of democracies.

@randahl Would be nice. Won't happen. Wish it would. Not a chance.

@randahl The gut-wrenching feeling and sense of despair that I felt on the 24th is something that'll stay with me forever.

And likely one of the first times I truly realised that sayings like "most people have good intentions" or "you have to put your faith in the fact that the majority of people will make the right decision" are said by naïve fools that think prayer is stronger than protest.

@Cyberoutsider @randahl There’s always “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”.
@randahl we would love to
@randahl Thank you for your support.
@randahl Yeah, the British leaving the EU was probably the biggest mistake they could have made, but I said this 10 years ago when I was in High School and I thought they were dumb as fuck even back then.
@randahl Except the EU isn't as much an "important alliance of democracies" as we wish it was. It's the UN on steroids, and that's both good and bad. Not trying to argue politics or anything specific, but vague generalizations like "important alliance of democracies" paints multinational mega entities like the EU with a broad brush. In any case, piece and love.
@randahl why does Brexit feel like an early manifestation of the ‘anti-vax’ movement?
More likely conspiracy theories + toxic social media = mayhem

@randahl wow that went by quick

has britains standing in the world improved yet? 🤣

@bweller @randahl Not sure, still drunk on all the sovrinty we got back. </s>
@randahl
I stand by the idea that Brexit was mostly the Epstein Class looking to evade rules & taxes that the EU was bringing in.
But also that it had massive covert Russian support.
And that if people had actually VOTED then it would have been a No.
Like @benroyce keeps harping on about:
GO VOTE. VOTE. Damnit.
@Gurre @randahl @benroyce I voted to stay, and I also voted in the first referendum to join.
@Gurre @randahl @benroyce I don't think Brexit was lack of voting. I talked to lots of Leave voters (and people who claimed to be "undecided" but only brought up Leave talking points) for the year leading up to the vote and every one of them insisted Leave wouldn't win ("it won't be allowed"). There was so much invested (money and narrative) in Leave. I kept trying to point out that only one of the many incompatible Brexits would happen but none of them wanted to consider whose Brexit we'd get.

@slowe @Gurre @randahl

yeah

i remember an interview where someone said they voted brexit but it was just a protest, they really didn't want brexit

people are stupid

i'm not insulting the british, as an american i'm well aware of the problem of stupid voters (and stupid nonvoters)

a vote is a serious thing everyone should take seriously

but then

{gestures broadly}

morons

morons everywhere

@Gurre I agree that it was the Epstein class and that it had lots of foreign money (including Russia). It had been built up to for at least 20 years.
@randahl would love that but unfortunately it feels like we are heading in the opposite direction and will be trying out fascism first. Maybe check back in another 10 years when we've worked that out of our system?
Baseline model to make it actually happen:
Referendum to start the process, referendum for a final Yes at the end (similar to the Nordic ones in '94). Majority in the Commons at both points, obviously.
No special deals or exemptions (unlike last time).
Yes, Schengen & Euro memberships required - but not required to be implemented day 1 or even decade 1.
All the various weird territories like the Isle of Mann, Guernsey, etc, that are within Europe to be made fully part of the EU via the UK.
@randahl I felt bad for all nations but England that day.

@randahl Don’t think rejoining is an option. Before brexiting themselves down the hole, the UK was a constant disruptive factor. Manipulative, two-faced, wielding false narratives to fan classic anticontinentalist/xenophobic sentiment for domestic electoral purposes. A PITA cancer. Good riddance.

In the end, like any club: if you want to join, then participate. If all you’re going to do is to scapegoat the club to cover up for your own fuckups, then hard pass and you’ll never be in.

Tried before, acting like utter cunts then vomiting all over the carpet before slamming the door? There will be a lot to overcome, to make up for, before even being invited for a sit down.

@randahl For tens of years UK politicians of all colours and newspapers spent a lot of time blaming the EU for everything. The UK got refunds and special treatment yet still despised the EU and the population joined in.

As someone who left the UK and is now a Swedish national I would only want the UK back in the EU if it had a change of attitude and signed up for the European program and strengthened its support of human rights. I don't see that happening at the moment.

I hope the UK will change direction but I fear letting it in will just mean another "problem" country for the EU to deal with and be a waste of time and money.

@randahl is there any opportunity for this in the works?

@randahl I wonder if Brexiters would appreciate the irony that the only part of Britain that did NOT suffer from Brexit is Northern Ireland.
Because Brexit didn't apply there.

"Under the Brexit arrangements, goods produced in Northern Ireland that comply with EU rules can flow to Ireland and the wider 27-nation bloc without customs checks that have dogged businesses in the rest of the UK."

But I'm afraid racism trumps rational thinking (pun intended).

@randahl they will be more than welcome tu join again but this time as a full paying member and not anymore as a freeloader !
@randahl rejoin? I’d rather not have them back. They were so eurosceptic when they were in the EU.
Also the country is so divided it would be like bringing a bomb into your home.
