1/4 🚨 There's only one remaining big negotiation scheduled on the CSA Regulation (aka "#ChatControl"). Last time the negotiators met in May, it was clear there are still some crucial open questions:

ā“ What sort of scanning rules will be in the final law? We continue to urge EU lawmakers to ensure that limitations on the right to communications privacy are targeted, and #MassSurveillance ruled out - in line with EU human rights and criminal procedures.

2/4 ā“ Will the final law refrain from making it impossible to use private message services and send emails without a government-registered ID? We have long argued that the CSA Regulation is the wrong place to tackle #AgeVerification and would have huge exclusionary consequences and a chilling effect on free expression.

3/4 ā“ Will the in-principle agreed protection of vital end-to-end #encryption remain in the final text? This technology is essential to protect everyone online, and it's important that lawmakers uphold their commitment to ensure we can communicate safely and securely.

We hope that this will finally be the opportunity to ensure that the EU takes important and meaningful steps to tackle child sexual abuse material online, in a way that is genuinely compatible with EU law and technical reality šŸ«¶šŸ½

4/4 āš ļø We've already seen the consequences of EU lawmakers playing with fire when the negotiations on the ā€˜interim ePrivacy derogation’, also known as 'Chat Control 1.0', fell apart in April 2026.

Although there were attempts to blame the EU Parliament, a closer look shows that the Commission and the Council refused to engage in good faith. Read our analysis here āž”ļø https://edri.org/our-work/did-the-eu-parliament-really-vote-not-to-protect-children-online/
