In memory of prof. Dr. Wilhelm Kobelt (born 1840 in Alsfeld, died 1916 in Schwanheim) and his wife Amalie were inaugurated in this memorial in 1921. Dr. Kobelt was the first doctor in Schwanheim and also a natural scientist and local historian.
In 1908, at his suggestion, one of the first forest recreation centres in Germany for recovered people was established here. In an open hall you could breathe the good forest air on benches or in deck chairs in any weather. Magazines were available for entertainment. The facility was also used in winter and was soon a meeting place for the Schwanheim population. Through the 1st World War, this facility came to a standstill.
Zur Erinnerung an Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Kobelt (geb. 1840 in Alsfeld, gest. 1916 in Schwanheim) und dessen Ehefrau Amalie wurde diese Gedenkstätte im Jahr 1921 eingeweiht. Dr. Kobelt war der erste Arzt in Schwanheim und außerdem Naturwissenschaftler und Heimatforscher.
1908 wurde hier auf seine Anregung eine der ersten Walderholungsstätten in Deutschland für Wiedergenesende eingerichtet. In einer offenen Halle konnte man bei jeder Witterung auf Bänken oder in Liegestühlen die gute Waldluft atmen. Zur Unterhaltung lagen Zeitschriften bereit. Auch im Winter wurde die Anlage genutzt und war bald ein Treffpunkt für die Schwanheimer Bevölkerung. Durch den 1. Weltkrieg kam diese Einrichtung zum Erliegen.
