#DigitalIndependance Day has once again arrived. The 1st Sunday of every month is your opportunity to reflect on past efforts to #DeGoogle or renew your commitment to dump U.S. invasive tech. There are better alternatives, either less invasive or #OpenSource.
This month I researched how I could leave Google Maps behind, and this article reviewing different applications was useful.

> But the privacy focus comes at a cost. While it's pretty decent as a basic navigation tool, it offers none of the extras we tend to take for granted. It's poor for detail on businesses and other points of interest, and falls down entirely on traffic information

Who is the "we" they're talking about here? None of these "extras" are things I've ever asked from or wanted from my maps.

@ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty I'm glad to see HERE WeGo appear in that list. It took me a while to discover it, yet it does pretty much everything I was looking for. Sygic is one I've used for several years too.
@ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty My target for the month was to look for alternatives to Microsoft #Office. I know LibreOffice is right there, but I've never gelled with it despite trying several times.

After a new round of checks, I've settled on @ONLYOFFICE . It's fast, has full featured desktop apps and has been able to handle everything I've thrown at it so far. I'm satisfied enough to have set it as my default! #CDNdid

@Doctacosa

Until 2007, it was much easier to switch from MS Office to OpenOffice/LibreOffice. Nowadays, MS Office uses ribbons, while LibreOffice still uses menus.

I'm a bit suspicious of OnlyOffice because of its Russian roots. Depending on US big tech or the Russian government makes no big difference to me.

Here in Europe, they started an OnlyOffice fork called EuroOffice, which will be really open source and freely available. Maybe a better choice?
@ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty

@M_E_ST @ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty The recent versions of LibreOffice also include a ribbon, it asks you on the first launch which user interface you prefer. I'm one of those that actually like the ribbon.

I've seen the news about EuroOffice and I'm keeping an eye on the project for sure. The initial launch doesn't include a desktop version, which is what I want, so I'm waiting for now. I wouldn't be surprised to see it gathering momentum quickly!

@Doctacosa @ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty Thanks for the hint about the ribbons. I didn't know that! But I've never missed them.

I just learned that EuroOffice will use Microsoft's OOXML as the standard data format instead of ODF, which everyone expected. What a shame. I will stick with LibreOffice.
