It's astounding how it's possible to study art at Australian schools from prep to grade 12, and then graduate basically knowing nothing about art history.

Just think about it. How many people do you know who did art in an Australian high school? Now how many of them could explain what impressionism is, name an impressionist artist, and their historical significance? Exactly. And we wonder why Aussies are so indifferent to the arts. #auspol #art
@ajsadauskas.bsky.social @aj and yet, some places taught that as part of your schooling, and talked about how a range of art movements happened at different times and often had similar movements in other artistic genres at similar times
What brought on this question about art in Australian high school? Asking, because art teacher appreciation thread 🧵⬇️ aka a member of TISM has been outed as a catholic high school art teacher. Hope he gets snapped up at a more liberal school if he gets fired (probably will...) quick smart.

@aj I would have hoped y11 and y12 art included a bit more history.

@aj I am more concerned about levels of dumb and dangerous that survive.
Eg. not knowing how to read, count money, drive, what recycling is, what can be put down the drain, how to vote, what superannuation is, how vaccines work, why nutrition, how to relate to the opposite sex.

Art history is very nice to have.
