I just posted "don't clean electronic boards with piezoelectric resonators or oscilators in an ultrasonic cleaner"
and someone replied "it works for me"

fuck hobbyists

No Starch Press should get someone to write an electronics book called

"Don't Do This"

and then explain why for each thing

for example:

"Do not let PVC jacketed cable (especially line cords) come into contact with styrofoam, especially packing peanuts." The peanuts will dissolve the jacket of the cable.

@bitsavers Yep... Seen that happen in storage. It's messy.
@bitsavers i hate it when this happens, it really ruins the jacket
@bitsavers wait what
@oblomov @bitsavers This is related to the reason for “melted plastic syndrome” when cables are packed in contact with chassis plastic, isn’t it?
@bitsavers I had no idea about pvc and styrofoam
@bitsavers they could release a sequel called "Knock it Off" for when after you read "Don't Do This" and proceed to do it.

@Somarasu

or

"Hold My Beer and Watch This"

some things that are bad ideas

1 - trying the "cook a hot dog with two nails and a zip cord" on a dill pickle (there is a DEC tech report on this)

2- gathering worms for fishing by wetting your lawn and taking the same zip cord but this time with two copper rods and sticking it into the ground

@bitsavers @Somarasu Dont you hate it when you want to cook a pickle and all you have is a power cord and some nails?

@cinebox @Somarasu

Some of the people from DEC worked with me at Apple and we tried it in a not so well ventilated room. Not a good idea.

@bitsavers @Somarasu do you have a link to the DEC hot dog please? I need it for... research purposes obviously.
@bitsavers I’d buy that and learn a lot for damn sure.
@bitsavers now let's discuss how to remove SMD caps 😅

@mmu_man

Hemostats and Hot Tweezers
or was that my band name?

@bitsavers @mmu_man
I still need to get hot tweezers, either for my Metal, or one of my Hakkos.
@bitsavers if you write this book i will buy a dozen copies
@bitsavers It won't help, sadly. Anyone who *needs* to read it won't.
@bitsavers Spoiler: there are three full chapters on how you can screw up with lithium batteries.
