ahh the story is held up by data vis. For whatever reason QGIS doesn't want to render multiple 3D print layouts in one project and now I've spent way too many spoons trying to do it the nice way.
I mean this whole thing is spending way too many spoons anyway - nobody is paying for this and the response to previews / WIP work from the relevant community is absolute silence, so...
