The Bohemian Rhapsody movie is disappointing. I'm pausing halfway through to complain about it.
They had a lot to work with, and everything is done well except one very important thing: the writing.
Hardly any character development, conflicts seem contrived, no theme or through line to speak of. Just a series of events, checking the boxes. This happened, then that happened. Hardly any sense of struggle or tension.
The stronger moments that should be come together for an emotional payoff simply don't because they've not been invested in.
It's easy to compare it to Rocket Man, which has perfect writing, a strong skeletal structure around which everything else was built long before filming began.
Both tell the tale of gay 70s rockstars riding to fame, but only one has something to say.
