This is insane. I read few days ago how Dawa Sherpa was left behind on Everest. He was considered dead and nobody was sent to rescue him because the mountain had been closed already (late in season).

He found his way back alone after 6 days

Hillary Dawa Sherpa Found Alive on Everest! » Explorersweb

Everest has brought us another story of miraculous survival. Hillary Dawa Sherpa, missing for a week and left for dead, crawled back from above Camp 3.

If you read about disasters on Everest it’s almost always the same story

-Shitty small and cheap climbing company
-Selfish foreigner with little concern with the health and safety of Nepalese
-Leaving too late for summit, or taking too long and refusing to go back
-Nepal government giving permits to anyone to maximize $
-lack of regulation and safety processes
-Sherpa having an incredible body that can sustain a lot

@jerome from the first story: they summited "hours before Sherpas were due to dismantle the route"—so little wiggle room strikes me as wildly irresponsible of the clients! But hey, I'm no mountain climber, I just read Into Thin Air like everyone else
@nev @jerome It may be unfair of me, but after reading that book I feel like climbers are all narcissistic assholes.

@nev not just you, very irresponsible to attempt to climb at that point.

I read into thin air… and another half dozen of those books. I’m not sure why im addicted to this genre

@jerome hey, I like reading IAEA accident reports (https://www.iaea.org/topics/accident-reports). I'm not gonna judge

@nev 👀

I’m sure there’s lots of “not great, not terrible” quotes.
