Day 6 of the LGBTQ alphabet series: I is for Intersex.

There is a lot of confusion about the term Intersex and Intersex people. In short, Intersex refers to people who are born with sex characteristics (chromosomes, sex organs, etc.) that do not fit the traditional binary, male/female, norms.

To be honest, I am still learning about Intersex and Intersex people, so if you are reading this article and want to learn more then you may want to check out the longer version of this article on Substack.

It should be noted that while older medical references often used the term 'hermaphrodite,' today that term is considered scientifically inaccurate and deeply stigmatizing. The correct, respectful, and universally accepted term is intersex.
