I'm surprised every time I see people posting YouTube videos on Mastodon. I keep forgetting it's not a commonly entertained notion that algorithmic, manipulative billionaire media should be avoided.

YouTube is not a public utility, even if people, incl government agencies, like to pretend it is. (Great job with the lobbying). It's a money machine for foreign billionaires with questionable ideology and the power, through their algorithms, to decide what our world view will be.

@leanderlindahl

There aren't many videos available on other platforms. And quite a few people in the Fediverse use:

and for that, you need the original link.

UntrackMe

@fediverseconnection @leanderlindahl
well, then you can make the video available on #mastodon.

download it from #youtube (or #x, #instagram, #facebook, or whatever) and share it here, for example with #ytdlp or #tubular.

@leanderlindahl I think you are not wrong, but not every video maker has terabytes or tebibytes šŸ˜‰ of storage to host their own videos and backup them too. So its not optimal, but videos are a expensive storage hungry media. And we don't even look here on the income generating element for the creators.

But absolutly would it be nice, if it would be more decentralized and it wouldn't be one defacto monopol.

@leanderlindahl it’s way worse than you say: ā€œengagement by enragementā€ is a real thing on YouTube. I have about 2000 followers and the more polarising my video the more traction I get automatically; thanks to the algorithm.
