"It really has come to this in America. Censorship is real. America needs to stand up. Scientists, stand up. Physicians, stand up." - Aaron Kelly, PhD

Members of the American Diabetes Association, one of them a past president of the organization, were shoved, harassed and escorted by police out of a New Orleans convention centre, during the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association (#ADA2026), on Friday, as they were handing out copies of an editorial criticizing Trump administration changes to US biomedical research.

The group were threatened to be arrested for handing out the editorial.

We can no longer afford complacency and fear. We must all act now!โ€ ADA's media team said : โ€œThe code of conduct ensures that the meeting remains safe, productive, and centered on advancing diabetes science.โ€

@dbattistella

An authentic interpretation of those goals would have the editorial handed out to everybody by the organizers.

Those physicians were amazing but as a US person who has to access our "healthcare" system in this country... US doctors are spineless as a group and have happily allowed insurance companies to take over their knowledge, skills, education, critical thinking, all of it for a nice paycheck. I sincerely doubt most of them could actually practice medicine if the insurance companies were suddenly exited from our system. They forgot how.
I've had one fucking amazing actual doctor in the last 20 years and the state took away his license to practice at the behest of the local "healthcare" system (the healthcare systems on the west coast are run by the insurance companies - fox meet fox at the hen house) because he refused to join one of their mindless practices.
We need professionals in every profession: healthcare, journalism, education to step up and fight back - they have so much power as a group but consistently seem to just shrug. Even their unions.
@Petesmom I'm sorry to hear it. It will take time but I strongly believe people are starting to come together and working to make changes. It's taken decades to get to this point and it will take decades to convince our governments to prioritize people over profits again.

@dbattistella The US could also try and educate and train police officers better. In many states it takes just four months to become a police officer.

In Denmark it's a three year professional bachelor's degree.

@sorenladegaard I believe the point of law enforcement in the US, and to some degree in many other Western countries, has changed. It's no longer about having well-educated police officers who understand the law, but rather having armies of people who demonstrate their willingness to follow any and all orders, and do so with a certain level of brutality. Case in point, here's a moment from yesterday's peaceful pro-Palestine protest in Toronto, held in response to the Israel Day march...
@dbattistella fat ass idiots attend science meeting
