@gombang The #WikimediansForSoftwareFreedom group [1] is currently bridging from a #ProprietarySoftware server (Telegram) to a #FOSS server (matrix.org). Our zeroth order list of matrix admins lacks gender and geographical balance - if you or someone else from the 45 languages-of-Indonesia Wikimedia projects who has a serious Wikimedia/FOSS profile is interested, please propose yourself quickly [2]! Easier to change earlier than later.

Wikimedians for software freedom - Meta-Wiki

@boud ok I guess I'll fire up my Matrix client.
ok I have joined the matrix room. Before I nominate anyone, can you explain what do you mean by "serious Wikimedia/FOSS profile"?

@gombang

1/2 What I mean is, I guess, two things.

Firstly, most of the people in the matrix group were/are in the Telegram group (I'm not in the Telegram group; I only have a few hints about who is there), so they'd be uncomfortable accepting someone new and unknown, even though technically, the matrix group is new.

Secondly, admin powers should be with someone reasonably trustable. The Wikimedia wikis are highly transparent, and all the candidates so far
have profiles that easily checkable.

@gombang 2/2 The FOSS part is that the group has a goal: trying to get Wikimedia activities to actually shift from the #TyrannyOfConvenience to accepting that FOSS may sometimes require a bit of effort or learning new things, but is worth it in terms of the software/knowledge ecosystem. So to me it would make sense that another admin candidate would have some sort of track record in promoting FOSS.

Hmmm I am not actively promoting FOSS although I do use them extensively. So I only partly satisfy the FOSS part I guess.

(As an aside, our chapter also doesn't prioritise usage of FOSS tools. Maybe we should change that)

@gombang 11k edits on idwiki + being an admin there - that's a solid Wikimedia record :).

FOSS: This is not a political party or a cult requiring a sacred oath of loyalty to the cause :). After all, having a group on Telegram was not quite ideological purity.

Having you as an admin on WFSF would be a political signal to Wikimedia ID that WFSF is serious about inclusion of the global south, and not just hypothetical promises.

@gombang If you're willing to discuss the possibility of shifting towards FOSS within Wikimedia ID, to me that would be worth it. Nobody would expect you to guarantee "success". I failed to convince enwiki to stop advertising for Google on talk pages.

I think the chair (of WMID) himself has floated the idea. However it was still more an aspiration than a clear plan :)

anyway I have added myself as a participant to the group.

@gombang

Bagus! :) So you can be our secret infiltrator.
