If you really like Paperback and Fedra's updater sequence, I made a standalone Rust crate for this functionality. It fetches assets from GitHub, lets you check for development or latest stable releases, shows the markdown release notes in a nice text field, replaces the running binary in both portable and installer modes, etc. Currently Windows only, but that'll change.
