@maxi avast for windows xp is still being updated
i personally prefer using the older (but still supported version) - the resource footprint is infinitely smaller

@xyla so interesting, i knew that symantec endpoint protection and an mcafee corporate virusscanner, before it went to be trellix, was available for xp with signature updates, but avast still invested in xp was completely unexpected

@maxi avast is known for keeping obscene amounts of legacy
until quite recently you could still get timely definition updates for avast 9. like, you know, the one that talks

@xyla @maxi what do you mean “the one that talks”, why’d anyone install avast if not for the regular jumpscare. TIL there exists avast that DOESN’T talk

@nrab @maxi you can make avast 12 talk i believe (i’ll check that later), but it was default and very extensive until version 10 (and the oldest supported is 12)

@nrab @maxi yeah, you can make it talk, but it won’t notify you about definition updates anymore

makes sense, at that point they were updating them a couple of times a day and on top of that they had hourly microdefinitions (they called that “streaming updates” i believe)

i feel like you could easily go nuts after hearing AVAST! VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED every darn hour
