In this last month, Spanberger in VA and Sherril in NJ have shown that centrists will not save us. Centrists are folding in the moments we need them most. Meanwhile Mamdani in NYC has shown how progressives focused on working families get the job done.

None of this is surprising. Centrism is complicity. Always has been.

40+ states still have primary elections. Elect progressives, elect fighters accountable to working people, not corporate interests.

@QasimRashid Agreed! So disappointed in my VA governor. I’m paying much more attention to the VA Dem primaries and activating my resistance network to ensure voter registration, and using tech like Oath.Vote and Sway to build more informed voters among my community and adjacent ones.

Spanberger has:

- Signed ten executive orders targeting affordability, housing, and healthcare.
- Reentered the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative to reduce emissions.
- Advanced a constitutional amendment to enshrine state reproductive rights.
- Passed the comprehensive Affordable Virginia Agenda into state law.
- Capped out-of-pocket insulin costs at $35 statewide.
- Formed new task forces for health financing and housing.

Mamdani cut a billion dollars from education and housing.

Mamdani's library budget that was widely celebrated by the Bernie cult as permanent funding is neither permanent nor equal to that of his predecessor Mayor Adams.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will cut school and homeless programs to balance budget

Less than a year after his election, Mamdani is moving to implement austerity to meet the legal requirements of a budget β€œbalanced” on behalf of the bond markets and the financial aristocracy.

@QasimRashid I’m not sure how it was in the rest of the state but a lot of my friends and I in Charlottesville held our collective noses when we voted for Spanberger. I know that her press was painting her as some kind of blue savior but her record belied any hope that might be the case so none of this comes as much of a surprise.

Knowing what I know now, I’d still vote for her again in a heartbeat because the alternative was having another Republican governor. I fervently hope though that the disappointment in her leadership coalesces around an actual progressive like Mamdani to run against her.

@HakeemG @QasimRashid That’s fantastic, thanks for providing this. Definitely one of those times where I am happy to be proven wrong.

@monkeyninja @QasimRashid

I'm not 100% sold on Spanberger yet, but I'm not going to pretend she hasn't done anything either. Hopefully the vetoes were more around style than substance.

@monkeyninja (Removed the others, because I’m not interested in participating in that larger discussion.) The baseline here should be what each has done relative to a stock Democrat. Spanberger has basically been a stock Democrat, though vetoing more Democratic legislation than most Dems would. Mamdani has done far more, in barely more time, and blocked nothing good.
@monkeyninja Mamdani discovered a shocking budget deficit when he took office, that Adams had covered up. He didn’t just cut funding for fun. The city is obliged to have a balanced budget. I’d bet real good money that funding will be more than restored.

@HakeemG @QasimRashid Source is garbage. It's written weeks prior to Mamdani actually balancing the budget in May. This was a scandal written about in March, mostly from publications to the right of Mamdani. Here's reality:

https://prospect.org/2026/05/12/mamdani-announces-balanced-budget-without-cuts/

Also, that source is you've been spreading is a tankie site that includes Russian apologists for the invasion of Ukraine; the types that think Democratic Socialists like Mamdani are not left enough (in actually not tankie or campist enough).

Mamdani Announces Balanced Budget Without Cuts

Buoyed by billions in assistance from the state, real talk about what it takes to run New York City, and some taxes on the rich, the mayor closed a historic leftover budget deficit.

@QasimRashid

Centrists want people to see them as a stop-gap/less evil as opposed to what they actually are; a collaborating arm of the fascist movement that exist to sap the momentum of the left.

It's why they are always desperate to keep progressives from getting past the primaries into any general race. It's why they rarely if ever endorse progressives who do, often even tacitly putting support behind the Republican candidate when the chips are down.
