Seeing the whole 'corporate pride is fake' thing going around again, and I have a few thoughts to share on this;

1) those are usually organized by actual LGBTQIA+ allies at those companies, not just empty marketing- but that's my personal experience.

2) This is also the reason why you won't see it in countries which are actively hostile and make it actually illegal to be LGBTQIA+ aligned, not because they're 'selective'.

3) I'd rather have more, than less allies, but that's my personal take.

that doesn't mean you shouldn't be wary, doesn't mean you should be suddenly cutting them slack on other issues they have, or pretend their work culture and ethics are flawless, even when it comes to the LGBTQIA+ topics.

But it does feel rough to see colleagues who are 100% well intentioned getting shouted at and hated for no other reason than people perceiving it as hostility, when it really is not what it's intended to be.

I really wish people would come together more. We're in this together

because to be quite frank, it takes quite a lot of coordinated efforts to set up and carry forth pride events at e.g big tech companies.

And to go through all that effort, just to be met with hostility from people who you presumed to be actual allies, is disheartening, and feels very wrong.

If you want to build a better world, if you want places everywhere to be more friendly towards these things, I personally don't think infighting over what is essentially puritanism, will do anyone a favour.

@anthropy I did write something on that subject a while ago (which I ended up posting on Tumblr) but sometimes wonder if it’s worth being posted on this account.

@erkhyan definitely, I like the vibe of that post, we definitely need more voices like this instead of people breaking things down

@anthropy The company I worked in that made the biggest "deal" out of "Pride support", I quit because they didn't handle workers homophobic comments.

I have mixed feelings about companies and Pride for different reasons. Pasting a pride flag on your social media in some areas and not in others feels wrong, like a PR stunt, showing actual support is a different thing.

Having pride events at the company is one thing, letting your straight workers carry your company's logo in pride colours during Pride, well, that feels wrong to me.

Seeing a Pride parade that was mostly just company after company, at times it felt more like I was watching an ad show than a pride parade. Knowing that some of those companies generate profits in some of the most queer hostile places in the world, and would NEVER fly a pride flag there, it feel fake.

I think it is good that corporations have "in house" pride events, but to be a part of the Pride event, we should expect more.

@lettosprey that sucks, and I'm sorry to hear that

and frankly I do think that expecting more from companies like that is entirely fair.

my comments are more about hostility towards companies that do anything about pride and lgbtqia+ visibility at all, because as much as I agree on a lot of what you're saying, I think being hostile because of the well intentioned but often unfortunately still insufficient attempts, does more damage than it fixes.

I just wish it'd be more constructive I guess

@anthropy No, hostility rarely ever solves anything, it's a topic worth talking about, but hostility should be reserved for those that actively try to hurt us.

I'm more inclined to use my "not polite voice" against Pride here (and I assume many other places) for their insuficcient efforts to include disabled people. Abelism and Pride is a shitty combination :/

@lettosprey @anthropy people not masking sucks, thats what i see everywhere.
@anthropy also people go after baby-queers that buy pride merch or do "this shows how queerness is bourgeouis and bad"-discourse and its awful.
@anthropy @bersl2 at the moment companies also get flack from right wing nutjobs for showing any kind of support for things like pride, so yeah seeing them put pride colours in their corporate logos and hanging them up for all to see is itself a *big thing* in my opinion… visibility matters and it feels like a big “fuck you” to the haters
