So, after hearing the Bezos's cocket (cock-shaped rocket) blew up, and checking to make sure it wasn't crewed, I started thinking about escape towers (the little rockets on top of the capsule of a big rocket). They're supposed to pull the capsule off of the rocket and get it to a minimum safe distance before an explosion (and high enough for the parachutes to work). And I was wondering if they'd ever actually been used for their intended purpose, and if they actually worked.
It turns out that yes, a launch tower successfully pulled a soyuz off of an exploding rocket and got the crew to safety.
