Working on a project for OSM that utilizes Wikidata flag info. There's a good number of wikidata entries that have a P41 (flag image) statement but do not have a corresponding wikidata item for "flag of FOO" with instance of "flag design" (Q69506823).

Surely some wikdiata power user could save me from generating these one at at time πŸ˜ƒ

Here's the city of Havana as an example https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1563

#wikidata #openstreetmap #flags

There's plenty of other cleanup to do too! Adding color info to wikidata, making sure flags have good images/svgs etc etc. A sea of opportunity!
@watmildon Is there a list of this kind of needed work anywhere? πŸ‘€

@theorangetheme This page has rough lists of thing that need squaring up (maybe in OSM, maybe in my data, maybe on wikidata)

@theorangetheme For example, my color data came from scanning svg files and roughly bucketing things. It probably is a mess. Also, wikidata may want to have more fine grained colors than my 14 buckets etc etc.

But missing image statements and classifying things as definitely flags or not is a huge help!

@theorangetheme also, if someone wants to sort out Q69506823 (flag design) OR Q14660 (flag) for various elements that would be great. It seems like a huge number of them should be shifted to flag design but flag is way more common.

@watmildon looks like there's almost 52000 items with a flag image but no flag item: https://w.wiki/Pieg

that's slightly more than I'd be willing to batch-create on my own

@anticomposite lol That's 10x more than I would have (apparently naively) guessed.
@anticomposite There's probably a reasonable subset of geographic and large organization flags that could be priority targets. I don't actually want all possible flags per se. Just flags that folks potentially find while surveying.
@watmildon @anticomposite Wow, a *lot* of those are just plain misuse, like '[country] ethnic group' and '[country] football club'
@jleedev @anticomposite My impression from lightly poking at things was "oh my what a delightful horrifying mess"
@jleedev @anticomposite Like... what am I supposed to do with this?? (20ish uses on OSM) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q458651

@watmildon you mean you *dont* want to look at every single flag to manually add it? Do you even *like* flags if you automate the process? Fake fan, smh

@watmildon Seeing "Chicago" and "POW/MIA" so casually dropped in among the flags of nations reminds me of that old post from a guy decade ago that went viral:

"How come all the hot chicks aren't from America? What country even is πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ?"

@BalooUriza I was surprised to see how few of the various pride flags were tagged on OSM. Many with zero hits. I am sure they are out there. Always more mapping to do I suppose.

@watmildon not surprised that the #Philippines is high on your list. @ianlopez1115 has mapped the bulk of these in #OpenStreetMap. πŸ‡΅πŸ‡

#flags #vexillology

@seav @ianlopez1115 it’s quite interesting to see which flags have higher levels of mapping! Good ole McDonald’s flag ranks pretty high.
