The lead developer of Claude Code hasn’t handwritten code in 6 months and believes software engineering as a discipline will disappear. It will be replaced by builders as PMs, designers and managers can use AI to code.

He believes we’ll see 100x more builders than we saw software engineers.

I liken this to how smartphones mean we may have fewer professional photographers or videographers but millions more people making their living with photos and videos they’ve taken.

Claude Code's creator on the end of the software engineer

Anthropic's Boris Cherny tells me major job loss due to automation really is coming — but job creation is, too. PLUS: the Pope's AI encyclical, and Trump abandons an AI executive order

@carnage4life one thing I don’t understand is the idea of all software engineers disappearing. I’m a PostgreSQL committer. I use LLMs to assist in my work, but every single line I commit to the repo is examined by me in detail. If it weren’t, people would lose their data. LLMs make catastrophic mistakes when writing Postgres patches. AI is also terrible at most kinds of performance evaluation, a key component of my job. And I know Linux kernel engineers in the same situation.

@melanieplageman @carnage4life Recall that it is an analogy.
We are in uncharted waters with AI and analogies help us but they do not chart the future

There is some very unpleasant, and profitable for some, disruption going on.
