Texas Democratic state representative James Talarico responded sharply to recent insults from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton following Paxton’s victory over Senator John Cornyn in the Republican Senate runoff election. During his victory speech, Paxton referred to Talarico with the nickname “Tala-freako,” a remark viewed by critics as containing thinly veiled homophobic undertones. Talarico, who is expected to be a Democratic contender in the Senate race, answered by accusing Paxton of hypocrisy and pointing to a controversial plea agreement handled by the attorney general’s office. Talarico specifically criticized Paxton over the case of Adam Hoffman, a former Waco attorney accused of sexually abusing a child over several years. Hoffman had originally faced severe first-degree sexual abuse charges that could have resulted in a life sentence without parole. However, after a mistrial in 2025, Paxton’s office negotiated a plea agreement that reduced the charges to misdemeanor offenses, including indecent assault and displaying harmful material to a minor.
