Baby killed by a water basin during a catechism lesson, priest acquitted on appeal.

It was 2019 when a 7-year-old girl died in the church of the Educandato Uccellis in Udine after being struck in the chest by a water jug that had fallen during a religion lesson. Today, after the first-degree sentence had condemned him to 2 years and 4 months for manslaughter, the priest and religion teacher Ioan Marginean Cocis was acquitted by the Trieste Court of Appeal. The school principal, Anna Maria Zilli, was also confirmed acquitted – already decided in the first instance.

Because the little Penelope Cossaro was participating in an after-school activity, the then school principal and the religious director of the institution were investigated for negligence and imprudence in supervising the safety and well-being of the student.

For Laura Libanetti, the mother of the little girl, the decision is “shameful”: “For the Italian justice system, no one is responsible for the death of my daughter. I left her in a school and she never came home.” The woman hoped for a possible appeal by the Public Prosecutor's Office to the Supreme Court, since the family had not joined as a civil party in the appeal but had chosen the civil trial route for compensation. The first hearing is scheduled for tomorrow.
