I've been trying to get a photo like this for a couple of years. This is the best one so far.

@donray Muy chula la foto.

Aaaatchís!!!

@donray achoo, sniff. . . Thanks for reminding me to pick up some Benadryl
@donray OMG that's from a cottonwood? I see this stuff floating all over along the Hudson river path lately, and I also took a photo of a cottonwood in that area yesterday, but I didn't realize they were connected until now. Great photo!

@jrbe

The tree is well-named!

@donray
Neat. THAT is the kind of shot you can only get with a manual focus lens.

@DenOfEarth

I should really practice manual focus. I actually used the auto focus on a Nikon D80 (but it’s not super fast in focusing).

I pre-focused it on a nearby object and then waited for some fluff to float by at about the right distance. It took quite a few attempts 🙂

It’s interesting to compare the photo to what my eyes think they see: everything from the fluff to the tree is in focus. I’m sure the brain is doing tricks to make it seem that way.

@donray
If it was very bright outside, your pupils might have contracted to compensate, and if that works the same way as a mechanical lens aperture*, it makes more things at different distances in focus at the same time.

You can also do that yourself on the camera but ironically the tree will be in focus, which you probably don't want!

*egregious assumption on my part
