70Β°F and sunny here in occupied Ojibwewaki, in the Great Lakes watershed. Popped out to the backyard, greeted a chubby bee, photographed some wildflowers which I’ll post after identification.

Enjoy a slow thread about yer Grax’s adjustment from big city livin’ to #SmallCityLivin. I will get plant namesβ€”common and scientificβ€”wrong and eagerly invite correction.

We’ll start with some #creepingPhlox ( #PhloxSubulata ) from our backyard.

More backyard creeping phlox (Phlox subulata)

#SmallCityLivin

Probably mulberry (Morus spp.).

#SmallCityLivin

#GreatMullein ( #VerbascumThapsus). Apparently a somewhat problematic invasive plant.

#SmallCityLivin

Probably #motherwort ( #LeonurusCardiaca ).

Gardeners are laughing at me, posting these non-descript plants.

Here’s the thing. We had a yard when I was a kid. But I was an indoor cat, just reading all the time. On top of that, although my mother grew up in a small city near Philadelphia and her father had an agricultural background, she didn’t seem to know anything about wildlife at all. So whatever was growing in the yard was um dandelions and non-dandelions.

So yeah I’m just catching up.

#SmallCityLivin

Probably a cherry plum tree (Prunus cerasifera).

#SmallCityLivin

Probably an apple tree. Orchard apple or crabapple? Time will tell.

#bloomscrolling #SmallCityLivin

Probably a cherry tree (Prunus subg. Cerasus), out in the neighborhood.

Lotsa people (well my mother-in-law) dislike a #blueJay ( #CyanocittaCristata ) but not me, certainly biased due to my adolescent fandom of the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club.

I filtered the hell out of the first photo because it was severely disadvantaged by my vantage (other side of a distant dirty window); forgive me M. Daguerre.

#GarlicMustard ( #AlliariaPetiolata ) in the backyard. An invasive species. It’s a beautiful yard but if it belonged to us we’d try to make it native.

A few weeks ago we noticed yet-to-open #peonies (genus #Paeonia ) in the backyard. Guess what?

They're all over the neighborhood now. Turns out they're Spouse's favorite flowerβ€”a bit of luck for us that doubtless portends even bigger and better luck.

#bloomscrolling #SmallCityLivin

#Lilac bush (genus #Syringa ). This pic is from a few weeks back. It never fully bloomed, probably because of the mid-month cold snap. Other lilacs in the neighborhood bloomed earlier and really pumped out their fragrance. Looking forward to next year's display. Good morning partypeople.

There are a lot of wild strawberries growing out back. Will there be fruit to harvest? Stay tuned partypeople.

@amcooper Use to have these around, gotta be quick, ants also love them! Small and sweet and well worth the effort. Ones I picked were from an abandoned airstrip.
