I’d love to take her to the studio, give her a couple of slaps and tell her, “Wake up. Come back to being Madonna! Try to compete with Charli XCX, she seems weak.”: speaks Linda Perry
There’s great anticipation for Madonna because she will release her first album in seven years, “Confessions II” (the sequel to “Confessions on a Dance Floor” from 2005), on July 3rd. However, some have clear ideas about the artist’s musical and artistic path. But singer-songwriter and producer Linda Perry, in an interview with Consequence of Sound, wanted to express her opinion about the celebrated colleague’s artistic and musical journey.
Perry would like to collaborate with Madonna but with a precise objective: “Lately, I feel that she’s following the crowd. She follows trends. She tries to compete with Charli XCX and others. Everything about her seems weak to me, not powerful. She is one of the greatest. She taught women to be strong and to be themselves, and I adore the way she has constantly changed her sound. Every album sounded different. I mean, she’s an explorer. She’s a leader.”
So what would Linda Perry do if Madonna said yes to her, after having repeatedly refused to collaborate with her? “I would love to take her to the studio, give her a couple of kicks and say, ‘Wake up. Come back to being Madonna and what she represents. You are a leader, so we need to come back to that.’ Then we should focus on the power of her voice, not the power of Auto-Tune, effects, and all the electronics she uses now to hide all of this. I would want to show her flaws and create a beautiful album, more acoustic, with strings. Something she could sing in front of an elegant audience at Carnegie Hall or a similar place.”
But – although the possibilities are remote – hope dies last: “When Madonna is ready to retire, she should make that album with me because I would make her a fantastic album.”
