What are people using for IRC nowadays? I was a big XChat fan back in the day, but both it and its descendent HexChat appear to be moribund.

My general preference is for GUI (running on linux), but if you want to pitch a terminal client, go for it.

@jmelesky you probably want somethign non-browser, but irccloud has served me well for years

@ansate True, though I’m open to a browser client, but would prefer to self-host in that case.

Still, appreciate the suggestion, and I might end up that route depending.

@jmelesky if you want to self host, i hear the lounge https://thelounge.chat is quite good
Modern Self-Hosted Web IRC Client — The Lounge

The Lounge is a free, open-source, self-hosted web IRC client. Always connected, responsive on any device, with push notifications, file uploads, and multi-user support.

If you want an all in one self-host solution, then #TheLounge.
I personally use #halloy as a client, and #soju as a self-hosted bouncer.
