Proto Himbo EuropeanAny recommendations for a #hugo #blog template? I'm kind of new to Hugo. I have a site up and running (not really a blog; it uses the Creative Portfolio theme), so I'm slowly figuring the system out. I want a relatively simple blog, with as little extra stuff to manage as possible. I want it to look pretty and be a place I can drop some thoughts almost as easily as on Mastodon. I'd like a little bit more, as well, however...
Features I would like:
- An auto TOC or "archive" or something to list and therefore easily find older posts
- Bread crumbs (depending on the setup)
- Some customization of appearance (at least the option of a dark theme)
- Some photo management something-or-other, e.g., a gallery, smart finding/indexing... maybe something more auto-integrative than just "put the images in the right folder and link to them" (this is less important, and I'd happily take a theme without this if it has enough other elements I want)
Characteristics I'd like:
- Easy to manage
- Help for the theme is synonymous with help for Hugo -- i.e., it sticks to common patterns, standards, etc. I want to avoid bespoke "we made our own system for..."
- Maintained but also isn't likely to change a whole lot in the next couple of years
- Git/github not required (I'm a "download the Zip archive" person b/c I don't understand git, submodules, etc.)
What I really do not need:
- SEO -- If SEO stuff adds any complexity to the system, that's a reason for me to avoid it; if it's just there and doesn't complicate anything, fine
- Reqired extra code/system stuff -- e.g., need Javascript or Rust to build or run the theme
- Special social media connectors -- I'm not driving engagement or selling anything from the site, and I fully expect to blog directly into the void, as it has ever been and ever shall be, amen
What I've tried:
- Blog Awesome: Looks pretty cool, and potentially manageable (for me); I will probably default back to this if I don't find anything I like better within a day or two
- Beautiful Hugo: After almost no customizations the build process threw an error (unexpected "with" in "else" structure or something, in an SEO-focused partial). Yeah, not interested in learning whatever system is involved in that so I can debug it.
If you know of a theme, or have heard a rumor, or even want to drop a cryptic hint (follow the white rabbit... on github), I'm all ears (I mean eyes, but you know)
