The #Trump admin is moving forward with a plan to provide Cold War-era #plutonium from dismantled #nuclear warheads to companies that want to convert the #dangerous material into #fuel for nuclear #power plants.

The plan has generated debate & some unease among #nonproliferation experts. If finalized, it would mark the first time the #US #government has made #WeaponsGrade plutonium available to #private companies.

U.S. Aims to Give Cold War Plutonium to Start-Ups for Nuclear Fuel

Companies say it’s a better way to dispose of the Cold War-era material — and fix a shortage of nuclear fuel. But the plan has also faced criticism.

The New York Times

The #Energy Dept has >50 tons of surplus #plutonium left over from #NuclearWeapons programs, & the agency had previously been planning to dilute much of that material & bury it.

On Tues, the Energy Dept said it had selected 5 companies to enter into “advanced negotiations” to potentially receive some surplus plutonium. That includes Oklo, a California-based nuclear #power company, which plans to partner with Newcleo, a European developer of advanced #nuclear reactors.

If they gave a Nobel Prize for Bad Ideas, this would win it.

@oldclumsy_nowmad @Nonilex
It could win the FIFA prize for bad ideas if that hadn't already been won by FIFA this year.
@Nonilex i mean we do need more nuclear for both ai and climate change. if anything i just hope ai breaks our country of the need for nuclear and tolerance of it. one thing that suprised me at first was that part of the reason we are afraid of it so much is because the oil industry also applied its fear uncertainty and doubt propoganda toward nuclear as well as renewable tech. we need both to figure things out going forward. nuclear is going to be needed for sure and renewable for other stuff. energy is the basis of all life and we are energy blind and its a scary thing to see this in people. but yeah we need to create energy as a human right and have that level of development in energy.
@Nonilex nukes for ai shell companies, think I’ve seen this movie before
