Decades ago my dad and a colleague had the bright idea of dumping "stabilized" nuclear waste into subduction trenches, the idea being rapid burial would beat containment degeneration. They made quite a splash-- until somebody less target-fixated pointed out the problem of fluid travel and circulation.

The "buried" reactor concept seems to share that myopia, at least as described in this article. Let alone the problem of mixing due to loop separation failure, the odds of finding places for these with groundwater isolation suitable for handling thousands of years of decay of a stuck unit seem slim.

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Approves License Renewal Application for Extended Operations of Diablo Canyon

The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) today approved Pacific Gas and Electric Company's 20-year license renewal application for extended operations of Diablo Canyon Power Plant. The NRC's approval follows a transparent and public process through which the agency determined that Diablo Canyon is safe and environmentally sound to operate for another 20 years, though extending operations past 2030 would require action from the California Legislature. The three-year license renewal process also included approvals from state and regional agencies including the California Public Utilities Commission, the State Lands Commission, the California Coastal Commission and the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board. Diablo Canyon provides safe, reliable, affordable and clean electricity to about four million Californians and makes up nearly 20% of California's clean energy. "The NRC's approval of Diablo Canyon's license renewal application marks an important milestone for

And that's thanks to nuclear energy.

"Electricity is the primary source of energy used to power the 15,000 trains that run daily across France. It is estimated that 80% of freight trains and 90% of passenger trains run on the approximately 15,000 km of electrified lines. However, France’s electricity mix is very low-carbon thanks to the strong predominance of nuclear power generation. "

"4th-generation reactors, often small & modular, are designed for efficiency, affordability, minimal long-lived radioactive waste & inherent safety.. it's time to emulate Beijing's real playbook by ramping up energy use & investment in nuclear R&D"🤦‍♂️

EVs are subject to energy price variability too. A lot of Europe is dependent on natural gas for it's electricity.

France had the right idea by going nuclear early, with approximately 70% of its power needs coming from non-carbon sources.
