Residents in the Shelter Point area of Campbell River, B.C., are being urged to report any sightings of an endangered Vancouver Island marmot after a wild-born, untagged individual was last seen near the Old Island Highway.

An endangered Vancouver Island marmot that showed up on a beach near Campbell River has now been safely captured and is headed to recovery facilities.

@giflian Thank you so much for donating to the Marmot Recovery Foundation. Without them, the species would be extinct today. There are about 420 marmots in the wild today compared to about 24 in the late 1990s.
@CatherineBabault the funny bit is I only heard of them because they sent some very silly blank Christmas cards to my mother (one of those swag-to-get-more-donations campaigns charities sometimes run) and that got forwarded to me when I was dealing with her estate.
