If we can bring ethical monetization to the fediverse without dark patterns (ie: ads, paid post placements, etc), we should.

Many creators would prefer a platform that supports them financially, and if the fediverse wants to be taken seriously by everyone else, we should make this happen and get server admins and project devs paid too.

We can. I will.

@dansup while I agree that monotization would be good for attracting people away from classical tech companies and towards the new more ethical federated sites. I can't help but think the monotization and "careerification" of social media is one of the things that ruined it.

@heckersec

I'm not sure if monetisation alone has achieved that. I think it did only happened in cooperation with algorithms and recommendations.

Imagine being able to ban everyone who floods your feed with ads. What a delight.

@dansup

@heckersec @dansup You've managed to sum up my feelings quite nicely!

@dansup

Exactly what I wrote here:

Without monetization it will be hard to get the big content creators, which are needed to bring the "normal" people over.

I'm really interested how this will be planned. But people are also paying for patreon and only fans, so let's see.
Happy to read, how you have planned it

@[email protected] I hope that will work But I see the main problem in getting them over. As all the content creators are on the big ones (because they can easily earn money) the people will stay there. I hope I'm wrong, but that will be the biggest challenge, to let content creator earn money on the Fediverse so they are joining

@dansup Maybe you can use https://hyperswitch.io/ as payment platform
Home Page | Juspay Hyperswitch

Hyperswitch is an open-source global payments orchestrator that connects with multiple payment processors with a single API

@bh4tech @dansup

Nice. I added it to a big backlog of entries I may someday add to the delightful funding curated list, if I make the time for it..

@dansup Asking this honestly: Do we really *want* those content creators?

There are already clearly some content creators that have come over from the dark side (mostly scantily clad women undulating to bad music) that don’t know there’s no algorithm to force feed their slop to others – and honestly blocking them is already a burden. (1/3)

I prefer the platform serving regular people – people taking walks with their dogs or showing the sunset from their patio – not those only motivated by getting paid 5¢ for some horrible attempt at keeping your eyes glued in disbelief. (2/3)
@dansup

Monetization also opens up the doors to misinformation too. Again, the more horrible things tend to be the ones that get “the views”, not reality. Which opens up another need — moderation. & if you’re making decisions about what is or isn’t desirable, now you’re in the same boat as Facebook & Twitter.

It’s a very slippery slope, IMHO, but the descent will happen fast. Be sure this is actually what the community wants. (3/3)
@dansup

@maverick604 @dansup just look at how threads do not pay people and it is still full of all type of bigotery nad terrible content. It has nothing to do with monitization.
@hiphopheaven @dansup Yes. Agreed. Monetization is not *required* for the worst actors to take to a platform, but it is like a big f*cking bright light for all the worst moths.
@maverick604 @dansup I fear monetization will poison the well. I certainly understand the desire for people’s work to be supported, but it feels a bit like opening Pandora’s Box. I don’t think the benefit out weighs the risk.
@maverick604 @dansup yes every person spending hours doing craft should have the right to be paid

@dansup

One thing to consider, however, is that the medium does not have to be the monetization.

What I mean by that is individual should be in control of their own platform where they can monetize at that point similar to the way people on Etsy will display their wares in a post here and then invite people to go to their own account.

I’d like to see people being able to do any commerce if you will find something they personally control

@dansup What would it look like?

@dansup It’s a difficult thing, monitization. And “ethical monitization” sounds a bit like an oxymoron 😃. But at the same time, monitization is not by default unethical.

But we need it here - I’m cheering for you 🎉😊

@dansup I agree. I'm interested in writing rather than videos, and pics. Maybe audio if necessary. But I'd like to follow this matter of monetization. Now lots of creators aren't interested in fediverse at all
@dansup I think there are good ways to do this, a lot of creators are out of job if they leave corporate media
