The Taliban just legalized child marriage. This is not Islam. It is a perversion of it.

But as the U.S. rushes to condemn this decree, here's what we need to reckon with: 36 Oklahoma Republicans voted to block a ban on child marriage just last month, and more than 30 states still have none.

I analyze the horrors that the Taliban is inflicting, the U.S. complicity, and what legal tools we have to fight back and protect women and girls in Afghanistan and globally.

The Taliban Legalizes Child Marriage—The USA Won't Ban It

The World Must Respond, And America Must Look in the Mirror

Let's Address This with Qasim Rashid
@QasimRashid the United States of Pedophiles would like a word
@QasimRashid Not to mention the paedophile in charge, and other friends of epstein...
@QasimRashid i mean, western christian nationalism has lots in common with fringe islamic sects (bigotry, misogyny, apologism to pedophilia, antidemocratic attitude, an unwarranted sense of self-importance) but they're brown people in thirld world countries, so they're ontologically evil for the white devils
@QasimRashid how is it that “child marriage” even needs to be banned? Doesn’t the legal definition of marriage require adults?

@ShadSterling @QasimRashid unfortunately no. and due to legal shenanigans if I remember right, since children can't consent to contracts (except for being able to get married with the permission of the parents) they actually can't get divorced in the US if they do wind up in a child marriage, at least not until they're adults.

I remember that being the case for a trafficking survivor who was married off as a child to a much older man here in the US.

Child Marriage and Divorce in the United States

As part of our Wedlocked series on child marriage in the United States, we explore divorce for those who marry while still under 18 years old.

Teen Vogue
@ToTheOneWhoHoldsMe @QasimRashid so we need a ban on child marriage because we carved out an exception to allow child marriage? Yikes! That exception has got to go

@ShadSterling @QasimRashid

It's mega yikes, and sadly not an exception as much as The laws in places don't specify marriage has to be between adults.

Just the past few years alone when we've fought to change that, it's been shot down, with various officials defending it with things like quotes about successful marriages involving 12 year olds. it's gross.

It doesn't help that it varies state by state how it works, And even age of consent laws don't necessarily apply the way you'd think.

@QasimRashid The current US administration loves child brides so yeah, they'll do little and might even find a way to benefit.

@QasimRashid Each Republican should explain, in detail, why they vote against.

It should be, by its very nature, not be votable upon anyway.

Are these Republicans declaring their own desires to marry children?

@QasimRashid The complete list of differences between the Taliban and US Evangelicals:
- only one of them has access to nuclear weapons
- only one of them actively wants Israel to eradicate Palestine to trigger the literal end of the world
- one of them uses a slightly older book of weird stories to justify their hate
