I don't know about you, but personally I'm not a fan of #discord.

Still, I think a similar kind of space for Linux Audio Development could be potentially interesting. 🤔

What do you think, and which platform would you prefer to use? Matrix, Mattermost, or perhaps something else entirely?

I'd love to find something #opensource, lightweight, and not overly bloated. And, if there’s enough interest, I could imagine setting something up for the LAD community. 🤓

@linuxaudiodevelopment There already is #lad on irc.libera.chat ;)
@dreamer @linuxaudiodevelopment Yup, all part of the long established world of Linux audio development, which that account seems to be completely blind to.
@petererer @dreamer I switched to Linux about six years ago after using macOS for decades, and I'm not a developer myself. With my initiative I mostly just try to encourage Windows and macOS audio developers to support Linux. That could perhaps explain why I wasn't aware of that IRC channel. 🙃
@dreamer Do you think this could work as an easily accessible entry point for macOS and Windows developers who want to support Linux and are looking for something similar to a Discord server to connect with other / more experienced Linux audio developers?

@linuxaudiodevelopment Maybe? we had Justin Frankel in there for a while when he was trying to figure out LV2 hosting in REAPER ;)

Probably easiest to use the Matrix bridge though. (if there is one)

@dreamer I see. 🙂 I want to explore this further. I've never actively used IRC myself, but I think I might actually enjoy it.
@linuxaudiodevelopment I do follow some stuff on matrix as that is the best we've got right now that is not IRC.
@linuxaudiodevelopment fluxer? it's a discord alternative, i'd have to know why exactly you don't like discord, but well it's free and open source, user friendly ui, and hasn't had user trust violations. it can be self hosted, though there's no official documentation for it yet (that's coming soonish). they're also planning to support federation in the future

it could be argued it's quite bloated as it was made to be a discord clone, but imo it's pretty good and nothing gets in my way when i'm using it

if you decide to make a fluxer community for linux audio pls tell me about it
@JuxGD That looks interesting, thanks for sharing! 🙌
@linuxaudiodevelopment awesome timing it's currently down for maintenance 💔
@JuxGD It is working here for me. Just created an account. 🤓
@linuxaudiodevelopment really? but it's literally down

orr maybe you're using fluxer.world or some other third party instance, the official one is fluxer.app
@linuxaudiodevelopment oh no you're right it's back partly
@JuxGD Thanks again. I will have a closer look at it. 🙏

@linuxaudiodevelopment both Irc/Matrix and Forums really isn’t working for me, I just really like the Fediverse.

So if another channel for commucation should start, I would suggest something you could follow from another place in the Fediverse like Lemmy.

@mosgaard The thing is that #lad has been around for many years (including the old Freenode version probably something like 15+ years)

A chat is anyway not the same as a forum or fediverse type service.

@dreamer I fully support you using the IRC channel, and I do want it to be accecible and visible for devs wanting to join. It just doesn’t work for me, I get disoriented in chats like that.

I would actually prefer if nothing new was created, and we could just point to what exists already.

That’s also why I suggest, that if a new place was to be created (for whatever reason), I could just follow from my existing fedi-profile.

@mosgaard I have no idea if something like that exists

@dreamer I only know Lemmy, but that is as you say not a chat but a forum, and it’s different.

I guess this is what Bonfire is set out to be down the line.

So for now, I think it’s definitely better to link to existing places like IRC. I believe developers from Windows/Mac might use it already for different purposes.

@mosgaard Good point, thank you and noted.

@linuxaudiodevelopment Although I'm not in love with I'd love a Matrix Channel (or IRC as it already existe). However, even if it's not popular, a forum would be ideal for me.

Any messaging platfom poses the same problem for me. Hosting content, while possible, is less than ideal and searching for topics, uneffective.

Just my two cents.

I love the idea any shape it tales by the way.
