"An estimated 40,000 residents in #OrangeCounty, California, are under evacuation orders as of May 22 as authorities prepare for two alarming options involving the potential failure of a tank holding an explosive #IndustrialChemical.

"Orange County Fire Authority officials outlined the danger from a 'tank actively in crisis' after responding to an industrial chemical leak the previous day. Efforts to stop the leak were not successful leading to a widening evacuation effort on May 22.

"The tank contains methyl #methacrylate, which is used to manufacture resins and plastics, according to a fact sheet from the Environmental Protection Agency. Local health officials describe the chemical as 'very toxic.' "

"Thousands of Orange County residents remained under evacuation orders Friday after officials warned that a massive storage tank leaking hazardous chemicals at a Garden Grove aerospace facility could potentially rupture or explode.

Fire officials said in a news conference Friday that the situation had escalated significantly overnight and warned that crews had been unable to fully stabilize the overheating 34,000-gallon tank containing methyl methacrylate, a volatile and highly flammable industrial chemical.

“This is not precautionary… this thing is gonna fail, and we don’t know when,” said Division Chief Craig Covey during a Friday afternoon press conference. “We’re doing our best to figure out when or how we can prevent it.”"
