Google's proposed workaround for sideloading unverified apps requires 9 steps, a mandatory 24-hour waiting period, and is delivered through Google Play Services, not the Android OS. Google can modify or remove it at any time without user consent. It hasn't shipped in any beta. @keepandroidopen #KeepAndroidOpen https://keepandroidopen.org
Keep Android Open

Your phone is about to stop being yours. In September 2026, Google will block every Android app whose developer hasn't registered with them.

@ErikUden @keepandroidopen This is unironically harder than on iOS

We should support folks on postmarketOS now, android is and will always be controlled by google. Even if they were to back off now, in a few months they’d silently do it again. The only hope for a truly free mobile OS is postmarketOS.

@luana @ErikUden @keepandroidopen the trouble is that society has congealed around iOS/Android to the point where many can't switch without losing access to things like banking which require using their Android app to login and approve payments.
@luana @ErikUden @keepandroidopen ONLY hope?! Ubuntu Touch is also great, mind you!!!

@ErikUden @keepandroidopen I was briefly a contractor with Android Trust and Safety, and they had me edit the documentation for the new developer verification process.

The worst part is how many Googlers I had to deal with who truly believed this will protect users with no downside. Not being allowed to talk to anyone with decision-making power was a close second.
