Coney Island in Fort Wayne is the oldest hot dog stand in America. It has to be doing something right to be in operation and going strong now for over 112 years.

They haven't changed much in the way they run, their menu, recipe or how they make their famous coney dogs. It's pretty simple, if something works don't change it!

(BTW - I ordered with extra onions - yum!)

🤫 I got this recipe from someone whose mom got it from an employee some years ago. I can't vouch that it's the actual exact same recipe they use or not. (See OP / thread comments)

Ft Wayne Coney Island Sauce:

3 tbsp lard
1 onion chopped and sauted
3lb hamburger browned and drained
14 tbsp chili powder
1 tbsp red pepper
1 tbsp oregano
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp allspice
80 Oz tomato sauce
1/2 lb lard
12 cup boiling water

Simmer for one hour

Their coney sauce has a unique flavor. Some love it & maybe some don't. I thought the unique flavor was cinnamon or nutmeg. It turns out it's allspice! I've looked for the recipe online. I have found where people do talk about it. A comment I've read was there's bread crumbs in it. This recipe doesn't have any breadcrumbs!

The first part of recipe lists 3 tbsp lard, then onion. I'm sure you're supposed to sauté the onion in this lard. Later the recipe adds additional lard.
