Morning all, it's another Toronto City Council meeting today!

I am running errands so will only be able to check in periodically, but check @GraphicMatt for real-time updates!

They are currently going through the agenda (comprising the business Council's various committees have covered in the past month, plus some extras) and marking items they want to debate rather than adopt automatically.

"Can you please shorten that?" Speaker Nunziata asks as Cllr Moise reads out a lengthy petition in support of pedestrianizing Church Street. He protests that it is important and insists on reading the whole thing.

Mysteries: why did Cllr Perks (Parkdale–High Park) hold these two items (2026.SC31.1, 2026.SC31.2) regarding developments in Scarborough?

I can think of a better term for chronic masturbators than "gooners"

An interesting item on centralizing the affordable housing waitlists & draw system. A well-intentioned but doomed item to ask the Province to let homeless people save money for housing. (See this Maytree report on how the whole system's fucked, pretty much by design.)

Nice livestreams to watch instead of this:

Back home and tuning into Toronto City Council in time to hear Cllr Lily Cheng talking about the importance of developing homegrown (non-American) digital platforms. 👀

just got vertigo'd by a candidate for councillor's website with a giant video header of them standing in the foreground with a subway train zooming by in the background 🙃

ooh, a stormwater management item https://secure.toronto.ca/council/agenda-item.do?item=2026.IE29.6

The policy change would exempt more developments from stormwater drainage limits, and also raises the limit for manganese in stormwater. Ultimately, making development cheaper/easier because condos.

Cllr Holyday: Why add more burdens on our water infrastructure when we already have so much flooding prevention backlog?

Cllr Perks: Changing the policy means developers are going to jump the gun because they know the value of land is going to change in several months.

Cllr Carroll: it's not deregulation, it's, uhhhh, adjustment.

Cllr Matlow (who held the motion) has worked on staff with an amendment he claims addresses the issues.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think Holyday actually has a good point here

Current item: Cllr Fletcher is upset that recently there was a "dreadful odour that was emanating from the [Ashbridges Bay sewage treatment] plant" and residents did not have a good venue to complain. https://secure.toronto.ca/council/agenda-item.do?item=2026.IE29.9

Man, if I called 311 every time there was a nauseating stench in Parkdale…

Cllrs Fletcher, Perks, Malik all waxing eloquent on a major waterfront development, many years in the works, including thousands of units of affordable units: https://secure.toronto.ca/council/agenda-item.do?item=2026.PH30.1

Ookwemin Minising is now anticipated to deliver homes for approximately 21,000 people (12,000 units) and jobs for approximately 2,900 workers over the next 25 years, through both the updated Precinct Plan as well as private development sites. This includes approximately 10,000 units on public lands, with a target of 30 percent of units on public lands as new affordable rental housing. It represents an approximate 27 percent increase in gross floor area (GFA) on public lands compared to the 2024 approvals. It also delivers an estimated additional 300-800 affordable housing units compared to what was presented to Council in the 2024 plan, with the prior range of approximately 2,200 to 2,700 units replaced by up to 3,000 units.

Cllr Colle: "I don't know what to say except that we're praising Councillor Fletcher too much." lmao

"The fact that life can outlast our stupidity, our cruelty, our short-sightedness, our filth, and come back with something beautiful, is extraordinary," says Cllr Dianne Saxe, describing how nature has rebounded in an artificial island literally made of garbage.

Cllr Bravo asks everyone to remember how worse it could have been, hearkening back to Alphabet's "Sidewalk Labs", essentially Google's data surveillance fiefdom, who were successfully shamed out of town.

Oh no, Cllr Holyday literally has more of a comment than a question (on the Six Points development: https://secure.toronto.ca/council/agenda-item.do?item=2026.PH30.2) He is upset about the shadows that the high towers will cast on the "stable residential neighbourhood" nearby.

On one hand, I don't think such objections are always spurious NIMBY shit, and I truly empathize with people who cannot even grow houseplants in their apartments because they don't get enough natural light (having lived in a few such places). On the other hand, this particular case is totally spurious NIMBY shit, also fuck anyone with a lawn

Cllr Morley says the site "could not be more appropriate" and brings hundreds of "desperately needed" affordable units to the area.

It passes 20-1.

The next item is 3838 Bloor St. W., a planned women's shelter in Etobicoke: https://secure.toronto.ca/council/agenda-item.do?item=2026.PH30.3

However no one really wants to get into it 15 minutes before Council wraps up for the day, so they are doing quick urgent motions.

Back at 9:30 AM tomorrow. Might go in in person, idk, depends how I feel.

I'm somehow both dismayed and relieved that livetooting Council feels soothing, somehow.
