I've also been using Kagi for my search engine for over a year and have found it has been absolutely worth paying for.

I get relevant search results without ads or AI bullshit. Even better, I'm able to customize what sites I want results prioritized from (ie: Wikipedia, the small web) and what sites to never show me (Meta-owned properties, pinterest, etc).

The old adage applies here: if you aren't paying for something, you are the product.

And IIRC @datasaurus is using DuckDuckGo and getting what he needs from it -- that would be my go-to fallback if I weren't able or willing to pay for Kagi

Now if I can just excise using "google" as a verb I'll be all set.

@gairdeachas @datasaurus I need to at least start by switching to DDG. Post haste.
@ibwatson @datasaurus And don't forget about https://noai.duckduckgo.com/ if you are looking specifically for AI-free DDG results.
DuckDuckGo - Protection. Privacy. Peace of mind.

The Internet privacy company that empowers you to seamlessly take control of your personal information online, without any tradeoffs.

DuckDuckGo
@gairdeachas @ibwatson @datasaurus I've been liking Startpage lately. It has the added benefit of being based in the Netherlands, so potentially more resistant to US reichwing bullshit.

@gairdeachas @datasaurus I’ve also been using DDG with good effect for over a year now and haven’t missed Google at all.

I’ve also been playing with SwissCows, Mojeek (more small web focused), and StartPage. All claim to be privacy oriented and seem minimal on ads and AI, but unlike Kagi, I don’t know how they make their money so it may be more short lived. :-)

@gairdeachas I need to start doing these domain customizations, keep forgetting about them
