I wrote about Apple's privacy promise yesterday — then Google held I/O and made the whole thing worse. They didn't build a better search, they built a cage out of the old one funneling you right into their AI and likely away from the actual sources of what you searched for.

Every Road Leads to Google - ByteHaven - Where I ramble about bytes

Part of the ongoing Big Tech's War on Users series. Yesterday I published a post about Apple's privacy promise looking increasingly like a marketing slogan....

@ppb1701 Here is my concern about this path:

- If you use AI search, are you certain the results are what you asked for and not what the company wants you to see? I left Google search behind years ago because the results catered more to marketing than a user query.

- If you use AI search, are you giving up the right to self-determination by suspending your mental capacity to spot the results that are meant to sway you in a different direction than you intend?

- If you ask anyone - anyone - if they are in control, the answer is always yes. But are they in control of the AI search?

Also, a note to @jerry: I didn't know autocomplete had "sled-determination" instead of "self-determination"and "anyvibe" instead of "anyone." It's good to know sleds are sentient.

@AAKL @jerry what it seems like. they are pushing it and while not necessarily right off always going to use it...basically a glorified gemini chat window. So when it does it's thing you are just getting whatever it deems based on algorithm and training back to you on the display. It's possible they might return at least some results or you might could phrase the prompt to, but they just want you to literally ask and accept the answer.

@AAKL @ppb1701 I am feeding everyone’s keystrokes into copilot so it can guess what you want to type* and it seems like it just needs some work.

* that was joke. Mastodon doesn’t have autocomplete** so it was probably your browser or app misfiring. Mine keeps trying to change my curse words to something more benign.

** that’s a lie. Hashtags do have an autocomplete function
