What always did and still is fascinating me, is the relationship of the reflections' colors with the transparency of the glass on which they are reflected. The darker the color, the clearer the view on what is hidden behind.
Some might say that people show their "true self" in the darkest times. That in these situations all the layers are ripped apart and the underlying structure of personality shows. I do not think so. Sure, people act and react differently when they are confronted with external and internal stress, burden or catastrophic events. But this experiment of thought defines a destructive situation as a situation of normality, often recalling a state of war in which everyone fights everyone.
However, human behavior is highly situational. Therefore, let's reflect on our selves in the brightest moments of life. One might say, that even then we reveal character traits that are often not the most lovely ones, e. g. arrogance or superiority. But the most important thing is, that in such situations we are able to act in different ways. It is possible to reflect and adapt our behavior. To form ourselves the way we want to be. Clearly, acting according to the own standards is hard enough.
Contrary: Threat an organisms' life and it will react with aggression (flight or freeze). The options are more limited - stress limits thinking. As the Bene Gesserit mantra repeats: fear is the mind killer. It is not possible to act the way we would like to act, to create how we would like to create.
Sure this is us, too - but is this "true self" closer to a true self, than that "true self" which is able to reach out for its ideal?
Maybe, just maybe, I am not a transparent identity but an intransparent set of contemporanously existing automatisms and possibilities.
