Dumb Ways for an Open Source Project to Die

How your dependencies became Bernies

Andrew Nesbitt
@andrewnez Read the title and now I'm stuck with the "Dump Ways to Die" jingle 🎶
@andrewnez Do you have a list of Open Source projects that are continuing to live a long full life?

@andrewnez quoting Belmondo in I-dont-remember-which-movie: "Because you think there are intelligent ways to die?!?! 🤬 "

(maybe a topic for another post?)

@andrewnez Due to this, I am now mandated to go relisten the Eve Online players parody/adaptation, so I will inflict it upon you too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2fyO4uKkxo

Jokes aside, it is on my list of things that are surprisingly deep in meaning and amount of knowledge packed in a small video/song. It is a fascinating cultural artefact to use to teach newbies about all kind of hard earned lessons about eve online... and there is a lot to unpack for actually anyone building a thing in an adversarial environment if you dig deeper.

@andrewnez
I have a twist on the "tribal knowledge is gone":

The project has no way to test it to a satisfactory level, but is known to currently work, and the maintainer is terrified of breaking it.

@andrewnez this is a great analysis, thank you.
@andrewnez i dont think any of those are "dumb" that just means cannot speak (#ablism) those are just the observations of ways any project stops, not just free softwarw either.

Dumb Ways to Die
@andrewnez a few of my friends are non-verbal. so i really dislike the common usage of "dumb" as a kid-friendly synonym for "stupid".
@andrewnez i accept that most people dont mean it this way, but as a derogatory term for something stupid, it gets its roots from its use to describe non-verbal people. :/ the Aus rail safety cause is a good one (one that actually touches an old raw nerve for me)
@andrewnez Which OSS death method is equivalent of the week-old unrefrigerated meat pie? 🥧☣️
