I just discovered that my Linux file manager of choice (PCManFM-Qt) can also handle desktop icons. My mind is blown. I did not know I could have desktop icons when using a standalone window manager!

pcmanfm-qt --desktop ← try it, it's the reason for the mysterious "Desktop Preferences" app that exists if you have PCManFM-Qt installed.

Oh, and of course, it handles the wallpaper as well, so if you just run that you're gonna get a black background with whatever you have in your Desktop folder
