Well I’m glad I never enabled WiFi or Bluetooth on that thing
@ra6bit
Whenever the topic of smart devices comes up, my favorite joke is "the only thing smart in my house is my wife". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJh72_O4pXE
I bought a TV with NO 'Smart' Features...

YouTube
@Ambulocetus I mean, I was the head of security of a smart device manufacturer. They don’t -have- to suck, it’s just that market forces usually ensure they do
@ra6bit no smart TVs for me. CRT TVs or projectors.

@bridgeenjoyer @ra6bit

Books: "Look at what they need just to mimic a fraction of our power!"

@ra6bit "automatic content recognition" is fuckedupness for "we don't know how to use this for a function everybody wants," which is a Kevin Hart automatic-blocking filter.
@the_turtle No it’s for them to collect and sell market research data and ratings and information about ad viewing

@ra6bit "hi, we can annoy you but not use it for something useful."

Samsung is 7-year-olds.

@ra6bit

I have one of these s___boxes, luckily old enough I can run it off my ancient Apple TV box and not have Samsung in my face all the time. They even game the remote so it’s virtually useless unless you submit to being watched while you watch. So I do everything via the Apple remote or my phone - less convenient, but far more gratifying.

It’s disgusting.

@ra6bit yep, though my cable box is an android tv box and i use that and its probably just as bad honestly.

@ra6bit

Surveillance Capitalism is pretty profitable and successful.
Sad.
Protect yourselves.
Most people are massively dumb sheeple and don't care about their privacy and cyber security.

A few pointers for those who care:
Proton email and VPN, Signal, Kagi, Mullvad, De-googled phone running Graphene OS, phone privacy screen, camera covers.
Amp up your privacy settings. Stay away from all social media, except Mastodon.

Good luck!
1984 and Big Brother (+Big Tech) are the real oppressors.

@ra6bit Yep, your tv can watch you now.

@ra6bit

It does make me wonder if one day these TV companies just set their panels to utilize any open wifi network or get some deal with someone like Xfinity to access their Wifi pass in case the customer does not provide access.

Just money down the drain to these coperations not having maximum access to your data.  🌐 💸

@ra6bit

Paltry, and lost trust is repaired by paltry pablum.

Dont buy Smart TVs, buy bug dumb display terminals that businesses uses, use a trusted device to feed it.

#samsung

@kevinrns @ra6bit the problem is, "display terminals" cost loads more, with fewer features.

I wanted a 65" illyama because it wasn't "smart". It was over £3000 at the time, and was out of stock in most places.

In the end I had to get a "smart" Sony one, which was £1900, even though it had more functions.

@chewie @ra6bit

Its more work, maybe form a buyers group. Once known, people dont want a surveiling TV - so numbers could grow quickly.

And searching is rewarded.

@ra6bit Do smart TVs have the equivalent of cookie files? Or the ability to clear browser history?
Why not?
