STREAMERS BEWARE: You might know that Google doxxes your location in the page footer. Turns out the AI Overview can also do it. It just had it randomly tell me where I live.

If you use UBlock to block it, you need to block the footer AND the entire AI box!

@lina One cool thing I recently discovered, even when I use a proxy server, Instagram can still detect my approximate location. How? It forces my client to make a recursive dns request to one of their dns servers, then grabs the public ip address of the dns server that I'm using, and geolocates that. Thought that was pretty neat to find out :)
@lina there are other search engines you don't have to fight with. I switched to duck go go a few years ago. No regrets.
@manpacket Yeah that's what I use most of the time these days.
@lina I see. This makes it harder to keep up to date with whatever shenanigans google comes up with.

@lina LOL, it's just a big pane saying Β« France Β» in big letters and nothing else, what purpose does it serve.

And have you considered switching to kagi yet? It's a nice search engine and I just checked and it doesn't dox me

@morj_lecteur I use DDG, and for me Google says the specific area in Tokyo I'm in.
