Artschool entry exams are tough today. We asked applicants at the visual communication department: „Tell us the name of an artist you like“. Many answered, „I saw something on the internet, but I don‘t know the name“ or „sorry, I don‘t know any artists.“ Few mentioned one of these three: Van Gogh, Manet and Monet. Only 8 of 60 named interesting newer artists. Stunning!

@Ullilust Makes me wonder why these guys want to become an artist. To be someone special?
@Ullilust Maybe it's a safe bet? I mean art school professors are known to have a clear oppinion regarding what is good and what is bad art (those present, of course, excepted). So, maybe no answer is better than a "wrong" one, or refering to the classics is safer?
@agitatra that would be nice, - but I observe the decline of knowledge since 10 years. Most do bot look left or right, the just consume what is shown to them.

@Ullilust that poses a question: does art need the name of an artist? I mean, I know it's borderline with art vs artist thing, which kinda it's on purpose. Put in another way, do I need to know who made something to be able to talk about why I like something? Or more precisely, in the context of art school, why is the artist name more (or as) important than the piece of art?

Feel free to ignore me :)

And: I understand exactly what you mean, it's just my brain shooting in a different direction.
