LOVE this article from my man @zackwhittaker:

“Age verification laws are a lazy way for politicians and governments to appear as if they are tackling online child safety, but without any forethought to the future consequences of amassing vast banks of personal information for verifying people's identities. Rather than holding the ultra-wealthy tech and social media giants accountable for their actions, cowardly and toothless governments are instead requiring ordinary people to shoulder the legal burden. These are the same tech companies that don't pay any tax, all the while governments let them get away with it.”

Papers, please: Age verification laws threaten everyone's online security and privacy

Laws that require adults to upload their driver's licenses or passports to access apps, websites, and VPNs will make the entire web less safe.

@scottwilson thank you, Scott, appreciate you sharing!
@scottwilson love this illustration because it is exactly what I was thinking. One thing we can do (while perhaps not enough, but something) is require more sites to have a welcome/caution page like this

@scottwilson @zackwhittaker

If enough people would just refuse to use sites or apps that require verification, this would quickly go away, since the entire business model for almost all of them is serving ads.

A huge drop in the number of "impressions" will significantly hit their bottom lines. Legislators will listen and respond to their complaints much faster than to ours, not that we shouldn't also bombard them.

The question is whether people will stand up for themselves and refuse this, or meekly comply like addicted brainwashed sheep.

@leadore @zackwhittaker Agreed! I hope that indeed folks will not stand for this type of thing. Sadly, I think many will just go along without appreciating the ramifications.
